The common council is both the legislative and fiscal body for the city. 
The council exercises many of the powers given cities through the passage of ordinances and the appropriation of monies.

● Evaluate City expenditures with a view of maintaining a Strong Fiscal Position and awareness of the Impact on Taxpayers
   while providing a high quality array of city services.
● Promote Public Safety and address the challenges and opportunities for multiple modes of transportation to safely share roads and sidewalks.
● Preserve and create Affordable Housing across the City for low, moderate and middle-income families and other residents.
● Promote Doing Business in Loogootee and work to strengthen our mutually beneficial partnerships with businesses and schools.

IC 36-5-2-9 Powers of Legislative Body
Sec. 9. The legislative body may:

(1) adopt ordinances and resolutions for the performance of functions of the town;

(2) purchase, hold, and convey any interest in property, for the use of the town; and

(3) adopt and use a common seal.
